Rebate means test threatens regional specialists

Medical specialists might evacuate rural and regional areas as a result of the Federal Government's plan to means test the private health insurance rebate, warn two MPs who are threatening to sink it.
Rob Oakshott, independent MP for Lyne – an area around Port Macquarie and Taree in NSW – told Gastroenterology Update he was worried a drop in private health insurance could push specialists out of rural and regional areas like his electorate.
“It’s taken a long time to build up a network of specialists in Port Macquarie and Taree and it’s a fine balance between private and public work. The private work is a critical part of [the specialists’] business model,” he said.
