New evidence backs expansion of bowel cancer screening

Cancer experts say new evidence backs the already persuasive case to extend bowel cancer screening program from one off tests to biennial screening. In a pre-budget submission to Treasury, the Cancer Council says research presented at an international cancer conference in Sweden in October showed “compelling evidence” that downstaging in bowel cancer diagnoses were the direct result of Australia’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. “The unrealised potential of our underfunded National Bowel Cancer Screening Program means lives are lost unnecessarily and at a substantial scale – simply because investment in the inevitable is continually deferred,” the Cancer Council says. “So why are we still waiting for program expansion, when the returns on investment in cost-effectiveness and social benefits are so impressive?” The current program only...
