A Sydney Children’s Hospital gastroenterologist has testified at the coronial inquest into the death of baby Joshua Elliot.
The one-month-old died at the hospital on September 9 after a central venous catheter penetrated the wall of an intended vein and discharged its contents into his chest cavity.
Dr Lisa Ewans told Glebe Coroner’s court yesterday that the right-sized catheter was not available in the operating theatre, and could not be found after a 45 minute search.
The doctor conducting the procedure, Majed Bishay, eventually used a catheter smaller than originally intended, the inquest heard.
