Being overweight and consuming barbecued meat are two of the main factors explaining why one in ten Australians experience regular GI reflux, a new study suggests.
A nationwide survey of 1580 Australians found that 10.4% of adults experienced frequent symptoms of reflux, and the condition was associated with high BMI, regular use of aspirin/NSAIDs, and regular consumption of barbecued meat and fried food.
The study findings, published in the journal Diseases of the Esophagus, also showed that infection with H. pylori and physical activity were inversely associated with reflux symptoms.
