Statins may have a role in prevention of gastric cancer, with a study showing they reduce the risk by up to 51% ¬-- an effect that increases with cumulative dose.
Reporting their results in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, the investigators compared the records of nearly 350 people with gastric cancer with almost 1,500 matched controls.S
Some 16.6% of cases had any history of taking statins, compared with 22.1% of controls.
After adjustment for confounders including H. pylori eradication, gastric ulcer, use of aspirin and use of other lipid-lowering drugs, a history of at least one prescription of a statin was associated with a 32% decreased risk of gastric cancer compared with non users.
