New surveillance guidelines 'first to be sensible'

Cancer surveillance in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) needs to change to make use of new techniques and focus on those at high risk, a world leader in IBD told an audience at Australian Gastroenterology Week.
These changes were already endorsed by the American and British guidelines and would soon be adopted by the Australian Cancer Network, said Professor Michael Kamm from the University of Melbourne, author of over 400 papers and six books on IBD.
“And for the first time I think we will have guidelines that are sensible. I think there will be high concordance between the American, British and our own guidelines. And I think they are of practical relevance.”
