Generic drug companies will face similar promotional restrictions to brand name pharmaceutical manufactures as a new code of conduct rules they must disclose the amount they spend on ‘wining and dining’ pharmacists.
Under a new Generic Medicines Industry Code of Practice, generic companies will also have to disclose the cost of ‘non-price benefits’ to pharmacists in the same way brand name pharmaceutical companies are forced to do with the incentives they offer to GPs.
The ACCC ruled that pharmacists can influence patient choice through the advice they provide about purchasing a generic brand in substitution for an originator brand, and also by the generic brands they choose to stock in their pharmacy.
