Laparoscopic fundoplication provides patients with long-lasting reflux control and results in high-satisfaction rates, irrespective of symptom patterns, an Australian study finds.
Over 500 patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) attending four Adelaide hospitals were stratified into groups according to reflux symptom patterns — regurgitation; poorly controlled reflux; regurgitation and poor reflux control; and symptoms controlled but patient wanted to cease medication.
Pre-operative data was similar between groups, except those who wanted to stop medication were younger and more likely to have oesophagitis.
The study found no significant differences in clinical outcomes (heart burn, dysphagia and satisfaction) between groups post-fundoplication.
