IBD link with pancreatic cancer higher than thought

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at six times the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, new research shows.
Reporting the findings of the retrospective, population-based cohort study of almost 3,000 patients at Digestive Diseases Week 2010, the researchers said that while they expected an association between the diseases they were surprised at the strength of it.
For example, they expected to find 9.5 incidences of a dual diagnosis of IBD and pancreatic cancer (PC) per 100,000 person-years; however, they found 12 patients diagnosed with IBD and pancreatic cancer in 15,784 person-years.
They also expected to find 0.97 diagnoses of pancreatic cancer among women with IBD in 8,158 person-years but found none.
