Infliximab gets the (foot) drop on patient

comments

Clinicians should be aware of peripheral neuropathy as a rare complication of anti-TNF therapy, experts warn, after a woman presented with foot drop as a result of common peroneal nerve palsy following infliximab therapy.
In a letter to Inflammatory Bowel Diseases clinicians from Canberra Hospital reported a 27-year-old presented with foot drop 40 months after commencing infliximab therapy. After withdrawing from the anti-TNF agent all neurological signs and symptoms resolved completely. The authors said while it was unclear whether the patient’s family history of multiple sclerosis increased the risk of demyelinating complications of anti-TNF agents, people with multiple sclerosis or optic neuritis do not appear to have an increased incidence of peripheral demyelinating neuropathy.
