Despite exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) probably being as effective as steroids in causing remission in children with Crohn’s disease (CD), it is not universally utilised in paediatric centres and protocols vary widely, Sydney gastroenterologists find following an international survey.
Of 35 completed surveys, almost 90% of the respondents said their units regularly used EEN for children with CD, but the duration of EEN administration varied from less than 6 weeks to more than 12 weeks, the clinicians from the University of NSW reported in the Journal of Digestive Diseases.
Earlier research found the use of EEN varied significantly around the world, from 4% in North America to 62% in West Europe. However, the new study was not designed to detect these differences.
